Well, things are quite exciting in good ol’ Beijing. You can bet there is a lot of excitement about the 8/8/2008 8:08 PM event (the Opening Ceremonies for the Olympics). What? You think there is a little something going on with their lucky number 8 here? Nah! Anyway, it is very interesting to see the event locations. Behind us you will see The National Stadium, dubbed “The Bird’s Nest” (right behind our heads), and The National Swimming Center. dubbed the water “Cube,” to the left. The Bird’s Nest is better in person than in pictures and the Cube actually looks like a large ice/water cube with bubble bumps on it. It actually blends in with the sky. So Fun! And, hey, there is a Beijing bicycle thrown in for the effect.

How neat to see all the Olympic construction and planning going on.
Lucky eight is right, that has always been my favorite number.

Very cool looking. Will I be able to see any of that on our travels around town or is it out of the way?

Liz, that is interesting about it being your favorite number. When we were docents for the art exhibit about the Savior at the BYU museum, there was a painting that used 8 with much of the significance of that number, as well. So interesting! Looking forward to your visit for sightseeing AND shopping, of course.
Carol, yes, it is a pretty easy taxi ride out to these two venues and it is also near the Olympic village. So we can do those three easily. Some of them are farther out, but we can see….BTW, there is a new subway line that makes Hong Qiao (The Pearl Market) SO easy to get to.
The northern end of it goes out to where more of the Olympic events will take place. Won’t we have fun!

If anyone is trying to get in touch with us via Email…we are all blocked…Yahoo and Hotmail…most likely due to the Tibet sitaution. But Skype is working at least at this time.

Cool! I remember seeing the models for the bird’s nest and the water cube a while back and thought, Wow! Only in China would they be able to engineer and build something crazy like that. Hey! 8 is my favorite number too! I’ve always loved it. Its just so round and looks like a snowman, and always gave me good luck in sports when I wore it with pride. Thank you number 8, thank you.
